This Saturday on SWING ON THIS, my special in-studio guest is Morey Sullivan, leader of the Brazos Valley Boys, who’ll be celebrating their 75th anniversary with a big Cain’s Ballroom CD release party on Sunday, August 29.
From 1946 on, the Brazos Valley Boys were Hank Thompson’s band, with any number of great country and western-swing musicians featured in the group over the years. Morey himself, a bassist as well as vocalist, began working with Hank in 1979 — following Thompson’s demise in 2007, he continues to lead the group at recording sessions and in live performances.
Morey and I will be playing several tracks from the new BVB disc, SWINGIN’ OUR WAY, and he’s got a story or two about the western-swing business that I guarantee will be as entertaining as the music.
We’ll even give a nod to his former boss with this week’s glass-lifiting number, a big country charttopper for Hank in 1968. Plus, Johnnie Lee Wills and the Boys with a tune that became a regional hit on rock ’n’ roll stations; Johnnie Lee’s brother Bob with one of his later tunes, recorded for the Dallas-based Longhorn label; and the Judds covering an Ella Mae Morse hit from the Big Band Era.
All that and plenty more this Saturday, 7 p.m. Tulsa Time, on SWING ON THIS, heard locally over KWGS, 89.5 FM and live-streaming everywhere at publicradiotulsa.org
