This week on SWING ON THIS, a version of the Western-swing standard “Bring It on Down to My House” like you’ve never heard before, by a ‘60s artist that Scott Gregory and I have featured on our HIDDEN SIXTIES specials a few times. You may have checked the playlist and seen who it is, but if you haven’t, I’m not sure you’d be able to guess it in a million years. I’m sure I couldn’t have. In fact, I just happened to run onto it on an album I picked up during a recent book and record expedition to Texas with my old friend Paul McSpadden.  

I’ve also got one from that early ‘40s Texas Playboys period, when Bob Wills was experimenting with the full-out big-band sound of horns and reeds. And our glass-lifter this week, coming courtesy of Brett Bingham, features a young up-and-comer who’s been making some noise recently; her self-penned tune is a gem.

 

That, plus a Hank Thompson radio broadcast of an early ‘50s hit for both the Mills Brothers and Rosemary Clooney, and a “Shellacked” entry from the Sons of the Pioneers — the flip side, in fact, of the lachrymose song I played on the segment last week.
